Welcome to the Thoracic Surgery Service
We are excited for you to join the team! We recognize that thoracic surgery can be different than many other services so this manual was designed to help you navigate the service and provide general tips for managing thoracic surgery and lung transplant patients. The care of our patients is always the top priority. We believe that our service can provide an incredible educational opportunity for the residents if we all work as a team.
The team is composed of surgical attendings, residents, advanced practice providers, critical care clinicians and other care teams (pulmonary medicine, ID etc.). The attending surgeons are very hands on with regards to patient care so please make sure to include them in all plans. The APPs are an integral part of the team. They know the ins and outs of our service, patient management, assist in the OR and are an incredible resource for the residents. There is no room for ego when it comes to taking care of patients. All members of the team are expected to participate in patient care. No task is too big or too small for any member of the team.
Motto of the Thoracic Surgery Service:
-
Patient care is priority number 1.
-
The operating room is a privilege.
-
Always be prepared.
-
It starts on the wards.
-
Work with Integrity: If you don’t know something or didn’t check something, it's ok to say you don’t know. Then go look it up. The worst thing you can do is assume something is normal when it is not.
-
Autonomy is earned and starts as graded responsibility.
-
Take ownership of your patients and service.
-
Work as a team!
-
Live above the line - ask for help, recognize mistakes and always improve.
-
Follow your duty hours! Manage your work hours and let us know if you are in danger of running over.
